What if I suspect my vehicle accident caused a brain injury?

Next to falls, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of brain injury in the United States. However, not all victims of serious personal injury to the brain realize the degree to which they are injured. Often, symptoms do not appear right away, making it difficult to know whether such an injury has occurred. Adding to the confusion is the stress and anxiety victims feel in the immediate aftermath of a motor vehicle accident.

If you suspect your truck or car accident may have resulted in serious personal injury to the head or brain, your very first order of business is to seek medical attention. You need to do this as early as possible for two reasons. The first reason is so that you can get the early treatment you need to begin recovering. The second reason is so that you can call on the law to hold the responsible party accountable for your injuries.

Some of the symptoms you and your family should watch for include the following:

-- Headache, nausea and vomiting

-- Disorientation and confusion

-- Unequally dilated pupils

-- Poor balance and dizziness

-- Loss of consciousness, drowsiness and fatigue

-- Problems with vision and/or hearing

-- Depression, anxiety, irritability or other changes in mood

Do not take any chances with the health of your brain. Even a minor brain injury can result in physical, mental and emotional problems that can last indefinitely. Further, if your accident occurred due to another party's negligence, a report from your physician will add weight and strength to any personal injury claim you wish to make in the state of Ohio and elsewhere.
