What makes a toy chest dangerous for children?

When your child has his or her own room, you want to make sure the items inside are safe. One popular item in children's rooms is the toy chest. Toy chests are ideal, because they hold lots of items without requiring much organization. Kids can toss their things inside and shut the lid, making cleaning easier.

Toy chests do have the potential to be dangerous. There are simple issues, like the lid coming down quickly and pinching your child's fingers, and there are more serious issues like the use of lead-based paints that could lead to poisoning.

In the past, toy chests have been recalled for a number of reasons ranging from lids that fall down instead of being supported by their support hinges, for not having adequate ventilation and for using lead paints.

What can you do to make sure your child's toy chest is safe?

Start with making sure it stays open without needing to be held. It's a good idea to look for a chest with a lid without hinges, so it must be completely removed before use. Another good idea is to make sure you purchase a chest that doesn't have an automatic latch.

If your child crawls inside a chest with an automatic latch, it's possible he or she could be trapped inside. If there is not adequate ventilation, there is the potential for suffocation, especially since a heavy lid would be too difficult for children to open on their own.

These are a few things to think about. If your child is injured, your attorney can help you look into a claim for product defects.
