Bike or walk safety and how to help prevent injuries on the road

You were riding on the side of the road when it happened. A driver swerved to avoid a pothole, and he struck you from the side. Despite knowing that you were there, the driver simply didn't try to avoid you.

Sadly, this happens too often. Cyclists do have a right to use the roadways, but those who use them may find they're at a high risk of injury. Ohio has decided to address this problem by getting more people walking and talking more about bicycle safety.

When more people are active in the walking and biking communities, it makes it much easier to understand why slowing down and paying attention is important. Officials working in the state also believe that getting people out of their vehicles can lower the risk of accidents by reducing the number of vehicles on the roads.

In 2016, there were 18 people killed while cycling in Ohio. Another 167 people were seriously injured. Added to the 569 people seriously injured while walking and the 142 killed as pedestrians, you can see the need for improvement in the state.

A campaign run by the Ohio departments of Transportation and Health urge people to use crosswalks and to ride with traffic. Taking those steps may help curb the risk of injuries and deaths.

If you're involved in a serious collision, it's important to talk to someone who can help. With the right support, you can file a claim and get the compensation you need during your recovery. Our website has more information on the steps to take next.
