Elder abuse awareness is vital for their safety

Elder abuse is a serious problem across the United States. No family wants to see a loved one hurt by negligent or abusive nurses or other medical professionals, but it does happen. Fortunately, you can fight back if someone abuses someone you love.

The Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine recently recognized Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2017. This is this one day that he takes to focus on the importance of recognizing abuse among the elderly. This abuse can happen anywhere, including in hospitals, nursing homes or other locations.

Elder abuse is typically committed by those in a position of power. They may be people that the elder trusts or people put in charge of caring for the individual. Protecting your loved one doesn't have to be difficult, though it may seem a hard task. Knowing what to look for can help.

There are a variety of warning signs for elder abuse. Changes in your loved one's physical appearance is one area of concern. Another warning sign may be if there are significant changes in how your loved one is spending or managing money. You may also notice missing assets or changes to your loved one's will or trusts.

Physical injuries, changes in your loved one's mood or disposition and dominating caregivers may all be signs that something is wrong. If you fear that your loved one is at risk of abuse, it is okay to speak up early. It's better to be overzealous than to wait too long. Your attorney can help you take the right steps to protect the ones you love if you feel abuse is a cause of the changes you've noticed.
