3 helpful ways to avoid crashing your car in Toledo

Toledo is a busy area with lots to see and do. You love living there with your family, but you also know that the traffic can be difficult to deal with. The roads aren't always maintained well, and drivers passing through to Michigan may not follow all of Ohio's traffic laws.

In 2014, there were 27 fatal traffic crashes in Toledo, Ohio. Fourteen of those involved intoxicated people. A total of 29 people were killed out of 68 involved in the collisions.

No place in Toledo is safe from car accidents. The crashes spread throughout Ottawa Hills, close to Holland and near to Maumee. Some were on the border of Ohio and Michigan, while others involved the major highways.

As a parent, you want to be as safe as possible. No area is risk free, so here are a few tips to avoid a crash in Toledo.

1. Be prepared for out-of-state drivers

Drivers coming down or going up to Michigan do not have the same traffic laws as Ohio. The speed limits are sometimes faster, and insurance requirements differ. Drivers insured in Michigan have no-fault insurance under the no-fault law, which may make it harder to obtain compensation after a crash.

2. Slow down

One of the best ways to avoid a collision is to slow down. You might be the only person doing the speed limit, but it gives you more time to make decisions if you see slowing traffic or other hazards up ahead. Keep a few cars' distance between yourself and other drivers, so you are prepared and have time to adjust for any mistakes they make.

3. Avoid game day

Unless you're headed out to a football game yourself, it may be a good idea to stay off the highways during big game days. Toledo, Findlay, Lima and other cities have major colleges that often travel up to the city or to Michigan through the city. Younger drivers are on the roads, many of whom are carpooling with friends. If you don't need to go out, it's a good idea to stay away from the congested areas.

These are just a few ways to stay safe in Toledo. If you do get into an accident, your attorney can help you file a claim against the negligent driver.
