What can you do if you're hurt while shopping?

Some people enjoy shopping as a hobby. Others do it because they have to. Regardless of the reason, it's a part of everyone's life.

The problem with shopping is that even though it should be relatively safe, you can still get hurt. Lifting something heavy could throw out your back, or you could slip and fall when you're entering a store.

If you get hurt as a result of the business owner's negligence, then you may have a premises liability claim for your personal injury. In that case, the owner may be held liable for any losses you suffer as a result of your injuries. That means that if you need to go to the hospital by ambulance or require physical therapy, the business may need to cover those costs.

There are thousands of claims made yearly for slip-and-fall accidents and other shopping-related injuries. Why? Most people just don't see them coming.

For example, would you worry about the floor of a grocery store being wet? Probably not, unless you see the store's employees put out a wet-floor sign. If they don't and you fall, then you could assert that the employees, and business, were negligent.

At the end of the day, premises liability comes down to negligence and the duty owed to customers. Shop owners have a responsibility to make their businesses safe for anyone entering the premises, whether you're walking in for a quick bite or shopping for groceries.

If you're hurt in a local store, your attorney can help you review your case and decide if you can file a claim. With the right evidence and documentation for your case, you may be able to recover your lost wages and other expenses.
