Disfigurement: An external injury with an internal battle

Car crashes happen all the time. Many of them are preventable, but many could have been avoided had drivers paid attention or not gotten behind the wheel irresponsibly, such as infamously after a "harmless" drink or two. As a result, other drivers and passengers end up with injuries caused by negligence.

One of the most horrible injuries a person can suffer is disfigurement. Unlike a brain injury, which may appear invisible, or a broken arm, a commonly seen injury, disfigurement is shocking and devastating to a patient. Disfigurement changes a person's appearance, which opens him or her up to scrutiny from those around him or her.

How does scarring and disfigurement affect a person?

Depending on the severity of the injury, it might be impossible to cover it up. As a result, the individual has to live with the changes to his or her body every day. Others may see the changes and comment on them, which hurts the individual's self-esteem. Many people who have injuries that result in disfigurement struggle with their sense of identity and may have anxiety or depression from the stress of the injury in every day life.

Disfigurement injuries are compensable

In most cases, when a disfigurement is a result of another person's actions, that individual is held liable for the injuries. That means that you can sue for disfigurement, just like any other type of injury, even if it doesn't affect your ability to work or move. The fact that your body is significantly scarred or altered is enough to show that you suffer mental stress from the injury, and, potentially, from social issues.

Disfigurement affects your social life, appearance and sense of self. No matter who you are, it takes time to adjust to the changes you face. With good medical care and time to heal, you can overcome this injury and continue to live a life you love.
