How can you be safer when driving in winter?

Winter driving has its hazards, but by knowing how to drive in the cold and snow, it's possible to avoid a serious accident. Whether you live somewhere that is normally cool in the winter or somewhere downright cold, knowing ways to prevent winter accidents is a good idea any time you want to travel.

Winter driving is difficult, because the roads get slick when they get cold. As the air cools, tires lose air pressure, making vehicles harder to control. Additionally, the addition of rain or melting snow to the roads could pose a hazard, breaking the road, causing potholes or causing vehicles to hydroplane.

Pile-up accidents are a real hazard when winter weather is involved, so staying an appropriate distance behind other vehicles is important. If someone is approaching you too quickly, try to get into another lane or slow down, so the other driver has to do so as well.

When the conditions become poor and it's hard to see, another thing to do is to make sure you either pull over or have good windshield wipers to help clear your windshield as you move forward slowly.

Regardless of the weather, remember that the traction of your wheels is the most important part of your drive. Without good traction, you could slide off the roads or have trouble stopping your vehicle. Always check your tire pressure, so you know your tires are working to the best of their abilities. The tread should also be lengthy enough to allow water to pass through the channels, which keeps your tires connected with the roads.

If you do get into a crash, recognize that you have a right to make a claim. Drivers need to understand how to drive safely in winter weather, and if they don't, they should be held responsible.
