Be a responsible motorcycle rider

Owning and/or riding a motorcycle can be exciting and fun, but riders in Ohio must follow certain rules to stay within the law. This includes going through the proper steps to get licensed. It is also important motorcyclists follow the rules of the road and take extra safety precautions to reduce the chance of accidents with other motorists.

According to the Ohio BMV, one can get a temporary motorcycle permit as early as age 15 and a half. Riders with a permit must follow certain restrictions. These include:

  • Wear protective eyewear and an approved helmet
  • No passengers
  • Ride in daylight only
  • No riding on busy highways or interstates

After six months, a rider younger than 18 may apply for a motorcycle license after completing a safety course, driving a minimum of 50 hours and completing a driver education course. A rider over the age of 18 must pass a skills test, test on a safe, street-legal motorcycle and wear proper gear during the test.

A motorcyclist should follow certain safety tips at all times to keep everyone protected. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation outlines a number of precautions riders should be aware of. Because motorcycles are harder to see on the road due to their size, riders should wear reflective and bright clothing and leave ample room between themselves and other vehicles. Other tips include:

  • Check the bike for any safety or maintenance issues before every ride
  • Practice extra care in inclement weather and adverse road conditions such as potholes and loose gravel
  • Obey all traffic laws
  • Always wear a helmet, protective clothing and eyewear
  • Ride drug- and alcohol-free
