Fall is almost here and the kids will be returning to school well before the weather turns chilly or we fall back on our clocks.  Let’s keep everyone safe on the roads at this time.

Remember that children will be returning to school and the yellow buses will be out in force.  Always treat a school bus with the utmost respect at all times because well, they are larger than a passenger vehicle and have children aboard.  Here’s what you need to know:

     1.  You need to stop at least ten feet from the front or rear of the school bus and “shall not proceed until such school bus resumes motion, or until signaled by the school bus driver to proceed”.  Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.75.

     2.  Where a road is divided into four or more traffic lanes, a driver of a vehicle is not required to stop for a school bus approaching  them from the opposite direction  So if you are unsure, remember to count the lanes. If you are on a four lane road behind or alongside the bus you have to stop! Simple rule of thumb –the bus has to be facing you on a road with four or more lanes before you can go.

     3.  A few additional things to remember:

  • All school buses must stop before crossing railroad tracks
  • Never pass a bus at a railroad crossing
  • Never pass a school bus on the right
  • Be aware of school zone signals and always obey the posted speed limits
  • Always watch for children entering or exiting a bus

     4.  Bus drivers are authorized to take license numbers of offending drivers and have tickets issued to offending drivers.

Most importantly, however, is that safe driving keeps our children safe, so drive safely!
